River ideas for future adventures

Every river changes with water level, weather, access rules and season. Treat this page as inspiration, then confirm current conditions with qualified local sources before planning a trip.

Chattooga River, South Carolina and Georgia

The Chattooga is closely tied to the history of southeastern whitewater. Its sections vary greatly in difficulty. Permits, access rules and guide requirements should be checked before visiting.

Nantahala River, North Carolina

The Nantahala introduced me to mountain whitewater as a teenager. Its cold water and established outfitter community make preparation and appropriate thermal protection especially important.

Ocoee River, Tennessee

The Ocoee is known for powerful recreational whitewater and its Olympic history. Releases, traffic and commercial operations affect trip planning.

New River Gorge, West Virginia

The New River offers dramatic scenery and substantial whitewater. Work with experienced local professionals and select a section appropriate to the group.

Snake River, Wyoming

Western rivers bring different scale, weather and remoteness considerations. Local guidance and conservative planning matter.

Safety comes before adventure

Kayaking and canoeing can result in serious injury or drowning. Written information cannot replace professional instruction, properly fitted safety equipment, local knowledge, sound judgment or trained paddling partners. Never paddle beyond your training or current conditions.
