How to Choose a Whitewater Kayak

Fit, intended water and instruction come first

The right whitewater kayak depends on your body, experience, local rivers and paddling goals. A popular model is not automatically the correct boat for you.

Begin with qualified guidance

Work with an instructor, outfitter or knowledgeable paddling club. Demo boats in controlled conditions when possible, and learn how volume, length, rocker and hull shape affect handling.

Prioritize fit and safe outfitting

You should be able to maintain control while exiting when necessary. Foot support, seat position, hip pads and thigh contact require careful setup. Never modify safety-critical outfitting without qualified guidance.

Match the design to the purpose

River runners, creek boats, playboats and crossover kayaks behave differently. Choose for the water you expect to paddle most often, not only for an imagined future trip.

Inspect used boats carefully

Check the hull, pillars, bulkhead, seat, thigh braces, handles and attachment points. Ask about repairs and storage history. When uncertain, have an experienced paddler inspect the boat.

Safety comes before adventure

Kayaking and canoeing can result in serious injury or drowning. Written information cannot replace professional instruction, properly fitted safety equipment, local knowledge, sound judgment or trained paddling partners. Never paddle beyond your training or current conditions.
